NASA seeks volunteers for a paid, yearlong simulated Mars mission

Embarking on the frontier of Mars exploration, NASA is actively seeking dedicated citizen volunteers to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of space exploration. The space agency has unveiled an exciting opportunity for qualified individuals to engage in a yearlong mission, replicating the conditions of the Red Planet within a simulated environment.

The chosen volunteers will reside and work at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, specifically within the innovative Mars Dune Alpha—a state-of-the-art 1,700-square-foot 3D-printed habitat. Suzanne Bell, the lead for NASA's Behavioral Health and Performance Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center, described this as a unique and incredible chance for explorers, adventurers, and science enthusiasts to actively contribute to scientific advancements, emphasizing the opportunity's significance.

This mission marks the second phase of the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), featuring a duration of 378 days scheduled to commence in Spring 2025. Suzanne Bell highlighted the mission's objective, stating, "We mimic what we expect for a Mars habitat surface mission," with an emphasis on collecting diverse data to understand how humans can thrive and endure in such an environment.

The simulated Mars habitat aims to replicate the challenges of a space mission, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. The four-person team can anticipate engaging in various activities such as simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercise routines, and crop cultivation, providing a comprehensive experience.

NASA is actively seeking applicants with a strong desire for unique and rewarding adventures, encouraging those interested to contribute to the agency's preparations for the inaugural human journey to Mars. The current CHAPEA mission, on its 242nd day out of 378, serves as a valuable learning opportunity, according to Bell, who stressed the importance of data collection to eliminate anomalies related to specific crews or individuals.

To qualify for this mission, applicants must be healthy, nonsmoking U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged between 30 and 55, proficient in English. NASA specifies the need for a master's degree with STEM qualifications and relevant experience, or a minimum of 1,000 hours of piloting an aircraft or equivalent military background. Consideration may also be given to candidates with a bachelor of science degree in a STEM field.

Suzanne Bell underscored the agency's quest for everyday civilians with astronaut-like qualities to serve as research participants. While compensation is available for mission participants, specific salary details will be disclosed during the candidate screening process. This mission presents a unique opportunity for individuals eager to contribute to NASA's groundbreaking work and be part of a significant milestone in space exploration.
